The Old Umbrella!!!, 1886. Artist: Joseph Swain
The Old Umbrella!!!, 1886. This cartoon shows the former Prime Minister, William Gladstone. The Liberal Party had recently lost the General Election to the Conservatives, and their leader, Lord Salisbury had been invited by Her Majesty, Queen Victoria, to form a government. The Liberals had experienced much dissent within their party, with the Radicals distancing themselves from Gladstones Irish Home Rule Bill. However, should the Liberals reunite under the Liberal Umbrella, then they would have a majority in the House. From Punch, or the London Charivari, July 24, 1886

The Old Umbrella!!!, 1886
EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating political cartoon that captures the essence of a significant moment in British history. Created by Joseph Swain and John Tenniel, this monochrome print depicts the former Prime Minister, William Gladstone, during a challenging period for the Liberal Party. In 1886, after losing the General Election to the Conservatives led by Lord Salisbury, Gladstone found himself struggling to hold his party together. The cartoon symbolizes this struggle through an old umbrella being battered by strong winds and rain. It represents both defeat and dissent within the Liberal Party. The image also highlights an important concept - if all factions of the Liberals unite under their "Liberal Umbrella" they could regain power in Parliament. This unity would give them a majority in the House and potentially influence Queen Victoria's decision-making process. Swain's skillful engraving brings out every detail of this satirical caricature, emphasizing Gladstone's determination despite facing adversity. The black-and-white aesthetic adds depth to its historical significance as it transports us back to the nineteenth century. As we observe "The Old Umbrella!!!" today, we are reminded of how politics has always been subject to change and challenges throughout history. This heritage image partnership between Swain and Tenniel allows us to appreciate not only their artistic talent but also their ability to capture complex political events with wit and creativity.
