EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a milking parlour equipped with the innovative Thistle suction and pulsation milking machine, dating back to 1899. Created by Dr Alexander Shields of Glasgow, Scotland in 1895, this pioneering invention revolutionized the dairy industry. However, due to its high cost, it was not widely developed or adopted at the time. In this image, we can see the intricate details of the milking parlour setup. At its center is a vacuum pump powered by a robust 4-5 hp stationary engine. The Thistle machine's principle involved using suction and pulsation to efficiently extract milk from cows during the milking process. The chromolithograph captures the vibrant colors of this historical moment in agriculture and farming technology. It transports us back to a time when innovation and scientific advancements were transforming traditional practices. This photograph also highlights Scotland's contribution to agricultural mechanization during the late 19th century. Dr Alexander Shields' ingenuity paved the way for subsequent machines that utilized similar principles. As we gaze upon this remarkable piece of history, we are reminded of how far we have come in terms of dairy production techniques. The Thistle milking machine stands as a testament to human curiosity and our constant pursuit of improving efficiency in all aspects of life - even on farms where cows once roamed freely but now benefit from technological innovations like these.
