Map of the World, probably from Sippar, southern Iraq, Babylonian, c700-c500 BC
Map of the World, probably from Sippar, southern Iraq, Babylonian, c700-c500 BC. This tablet contains both a cuneiform inscription and a unique map of the Mesopotamian world. Babylon is shown in the centre and Assyria, Elam and other places are also named. The central area is ringed by a circular waterway labelled Salt-Sea. The outer rim of the sea is surrounded by what were probably originally eight regions, each indicated by a triangle, labelled Region or Island, and marked with the distance in between. The purpose of the map is to explain the Babylonian view of the mythological world. From the British Museums collection

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable artifact from ancient times - the Map of the World, probably from Sippar, southern Iraq. Created by Babylonians between 700 and 500 BC, this ceramic tablet is an extraordinary blend of artistry and knowledge. The map features a circular waterway labeled Salt-Sea encircling the central area where Babylon proudly stands as the epicenter of civilization. Other prominent regions like Assyria and Elam are also identified on this unique piece. The outer rim of the sea exhibits what were likely eight distinct regions or islands, each marked with a triangle denoting their location and separated by measured distances. This meticulously inscribed tablet serves to elucidate the mythological world according to Babylonian beliefs. Preserved in pristine condition within the British Museum's collection, this artifact offers us a glimpse into how our ancestors perceived their surroundings thousands of years ago. Its vibrant colors bring life to an otherwise distant era, reminding us that even in antiquity people sought to understand their place in the world. As we marvel at this ancient masterpiece created through cuneiform inscription techniques, we cannot help but appreciate its significance as both an artistic creation and historical document. It stands testament to humanity's innate curiosity about our environment and our relentless pursuit of knowledge throughout time.
