Little Gulliver, 1873
EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating print that captures the political turmoil of France's Third Republic in the late 19th century. Depicting Louis Adolphe Thiers, the first president of this new republic, it showcases his struggle to maintain control amidst various factions and opposition. In this satirical cartoon by Joseph Swain and John Tenniel, Thiers assumes the role of Gulliver from Jonathan Swift's famous novel "Gulliver's Travels". Tied up and surrounded by small men representing different activist groups such as monarchists and Red Republicans, he exclaims defiantly, "Make your Game my Little Men! It Amuses you, and it won't Hinder me". The image serves as a metaphor for Thiers' relentless battle to govern while facing vehement opposition from all sides. Despite being tied down by these factions and an intrusive press, he tries to carry on with normal business. The monochrome engraving adds depth to the scene while highlighting the gravity of the situation. This print not only reflects the political climate of its time but also demonstrates how art can be used as a powerful medium for social commentary. It reminds us that even great leaders like Thiers faced immense challenges in their quest for stability during times of upheaval. Overall, "Little Gulliver" is a thought-provoking piece that invites viewers to contemplate the complexities of governance and power struggles within society.
