James Clarke Hook, Royal Academician, 1880. He first exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1839. His early paintings were depictions of historical and heroic events, and events from romantic literature. In 1850 he was elected associate of the Royal Academy, and became an academician in 1860. In later life he turned his attention to landscapes and nature. From Men of Mark: a gallery of contemporary portraits of men distinguished in the Senate, the Church, in science, literature and art, the army, navy, law, medicine, etc. Photographed from life by Lock and Whitfield, with brief biographical notices by Thompson Cooper.
