Head of Augustus, first half of 1st century

Head of Augustus, first half of 1st century. Gaius Julius Caesar Octavianus (63 BC-14 AD) became one of a triumvirate of rulers after the death in 44 BC of Julius Caesar, his great-uncle, whose dictatorship had brought an end to the Roman republic. He became sole ruler in 31 BC after defeating Mark Anthony at the Battle of Actium, and in 27 BC proclaimed himself Emperor, adopting the title Caesar Augustus. Octavians rule, which lasted until 14 AD, ended a century of civil strife and was a period of peace and prosperity in which Rome attained the height of its imperial power. Found in the collection of The Hermitage, St Petersburg

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the majestic "Head of Augustus" a remarkable sculpture from the first half of the 1st century. Gaius Julius Caesar Octavianus, commonly known as Augustus, rose to power after the demise of his great-uncle Julius Caesar in 44 BC. His rule marked a significant turning point in Roman history, transitioning from a republic to an empire. Augustus' journey to becoming Rome's sole ruler was not without challenges. In 31 BC, he emerged victorious against Mark Antony at the Battle of Actium and subsequently declared himself Emperor in 27 BC, adopting the title Caesar Augustus. His reign endured until 14 AD and brought about an era of peace and prosperity for Rome. The intricately carved marble bust captures Augustus' commanding presence and regal aura. The artist skillfully portrays his distinguished features - strong jawline, piercing eyes, and noble expression - symbolizing leadership and authority. Now housed in The Hermitage collection in St Petersburg, this masterpiece represents not only artistic excellence but also serves as a tangible link to ancient Roman civilization. It stands as a testament to Augustus' pivotal role in ending years of civil strife within Rome while ushering in an age where imperial power reached its zenith. This photograph is a testament to our fascination with history and artistry; it allows us to appreciate both the craftsmanship involved in creating such masterpieces and their significance within broader historical contexts.
