Faust and Mephistopheles, 1888

Faust and Mephistopheles, 1888. Faust is the House of Lords and Mr Henry Labouchere MP is Mephistopheles. Labouchere was the latest in a long line of MPs to introduce a proposal to reform the House of Lords. Attempts had been made at the beginning of the 1880s but had come to nothing. The House of Lords, like Faust, wanted to remain the same for ever. From Punch, or the London Charivari, March 24, 1888

EDITORS COMMENTS
The print titled "Faust and Mephistopheles, 1888" captures the political satire of its time. In this clever depiction, Faust symbolizes the House of Lords while Mr Henry Labouchere MP embodies Mephistopheles. Labouchere was one among many MPs who attempted to reform the House of Lords during the early 1880s but faced constant resistance. Just like Faust's desire to remain unchanged forever, the House of Lords staunchly clung onto its traditional ways. This caricature serves as a powerful commentary on conservative politics and resistance to change within government institutions. The engraving showcases Edward Linley Sambourne's artistic prowess in capturing both the physical attributes and underlying concepts associated with these characters. The bearded figures represent aged statesmen, emphasizing their long-standing presence in parliament. This satirical piece not only highlights specific individuals such as Labouchere but also reflects broader themes prevalent in 19th-century literature. It demonstrates how art can be used as a tool for social commentary, shedding light on important political debates surrounding reform and progress. As we observe this historical image today, it reminds us of the ongoing struggle between tradition and change within our own governmental systems. The print serves as a testament to the enduring power of satire in exposing societal issues that transcend time periods.
