EDITORS COMMENTS
In this powerful photo print, taken in May 1914 outside Buckingham Palace, London, we witness the arrest of Emmeline Pankhurst by Superintendent Rolfe. Mrs. Pankhurst, a prominent figure in the suffragette movement, was attempting to present a petition to the king when she was apprehended. As she was driven away to Holloway Gaol, she defiantly called out for her arrest at the gates of the palace to be told to King George V himself. Emmeline Pankhurst's unwavering dedication and courage were evident throughout her fight for women's voting rights. This arrest marked just one of many times she would find herself behind bars during this arduous struggle. Sadly, Superintendent Rolfe passed away from heart failure only two weeks after this incident. The image captures not only the historical significance of this moment but also showcases the determination and strength displayed by Mrs. Pankhurst and other suffragettes who fought tirelessly for equality and human rights. This monochrome photograph serves as a reminder of an era when women like Emmeline Pankhurst challenged societal norms and demanded change through their activism and protests. It is a testament to their bravery that continues to inspire generations today.
