Last Eglinton Tournament. - The Earl doing Battle for his Lady. 1858

Last Eglinton Tournament. - The Earl doing Battle for his Lady, 1858. Lord Eglinton, Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, is the knight in shining armour, and delivers a snub to a Cardinal of the Catholic Church. The Cardinal is seated on a rather small and worried-looking ass and is readily identifiable by the cross keys symbol, as well as by his dress. The story goes that Lord Eglinton had heard that the Cardinal, attending a dinner, had proposed a toast to the sovereign. This turned out not to be Queen Victoria, but the Pope. When the Mayor of Dublin later proposed a banquet, not only did Eglinton not attend, but many of his friends stayed at home also to avoid dining with the Cardinal. Eglinton is shown in heraldic armour because, in 1839, he had staged a medieval tournament which, although it drew some 100, 000 visitors, was subjected to both bad weather and inevitable derision. From Punch, or the London Charivari, September 18, 1858

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Last Eglinton Tournament - The Earl doing Battle for his Lady, 1858" captures a moment of historical significance and political tension. Lord Eglinton, the distinguished knight in shining armor, takes center stage as he confronts a worried-looking Cardinal of the Catholic Church on a rather small donkey. The story behind this image dates back to an incident at a dinner where the Cardinal proposed a toast to the Pope instead of Queen Victoria. Outraged by this act, Lord Eglinton decided to snub the Cardinal by refusing to attend a subsequent banquet where he would be present. Not only did Lord Eglinton stay away from the event but also convinced many of his friends to do so, causing quite a stir. Lord Eglinton's choice of heraldic armor in this depiction is significant as it harks back to his previous attempt at staging a medieval tournament in 1839. Despite drawing an impressive crowd of around 100,000 visitors, unfavorable weather conditions and mockery marred its success. This intriguing photograph was originally featured in Punch magazine on September 18th, 1858. It offers us not just visual insight into an important moment but also sheds light on the complex dynamics between religion and politics during that era.
