Drawings of Mars showing its canals and polar ice caps, 1907
Drawings of Mars showing its canals and polar ice caps, 1907. These drawings are from observations made at the Lowell Observatory, Flagstaff, Arizona, USA, on 8-12 July, 1907. The American astronomer Percival Lowell (1855-1916) theorised that a Martian civilization, faced with climate change, had built the canals to transport water from the planets ice caps to irrigate crops. In fact the canals did not exist; they are now thought to have been optical illusions possibly caused by dust storms

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate drawings of Mars, created by American astronomer Percival Lowell in 1907. These detailed illustrations depict the planet's canals and polar ice caps, offering a glimpse into the scientific beliefs of that era. Lowell theorized that these canals were constructed by an advanced Martian civilization to combat climate change, utilizing them as transportation routes to bring water from the ice caps for irrigation purposes. However, it is now widely accepted that these canals were mere optical illusions, potentially influenced by dust storms on Mars. Despite this misconception, Lowell's drawings remain significant artifacts in our understanding of early 20th-century astronomy and planetary exploration. The black and white composition adds a sense of timelessness to this image, emphasizing its historical value. The print originates from observations made at the renowned Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff, Arizona – a hub for astronomical research during that period. As we admire this artwork today, it serves as a reminder of how scientific knowledge evolves over time. It encourages us to question assumptions and embrace new discoveries while appreciating the dedication and curiosity exhibited by astronomers like Percival Lowell who paved the way for our current understanding of Mars and beyond.
