Canine at the Westminster Pit, 1862

Canine at the Westminster Pit, 1862. Pit Bull terriers are set in a pit at Westminster. The one on the right is Derby, the dog of Lord Derby, the Conservative Leader. The one on the left is the Westbury Pup. This refers to an ongoing battle in parliament during which Lord Westbury was at odds with Lord Chelmsford. It stemmed from an omission in the new Bankruptcy Act which meant that some officials of the Insolvent Court had lost pay. However, when Lord Derby rose to intervene in the argument, Lord Westbury turned on him. According to Mr Punch, great fun was had by all, and the clerks at the centre of the row would simply have to wait a little longer for their case to be resolved. From Punch, or the London Charivari, March 29, 1862

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Canine at the Westminster Pit, 1862" captures a unique moment in history where politics and humor intertwine. The image showcases two Pit Bull terriers, Derby and the Westbury Pup, set in a pit at Westminster. However, this seemingly innocent scene holds a deeper meaning. During this time, an intense battle was raging in parliament between Lord Westbury and Lord Chelmsford over an omission in the new Bankruptcy Act that resulted in some officials losing their pay. As tensions rose, Lord Derby, the Conservative Leader and owner of one of the dogs depicted here, stepped into the argument only to be turned on by Lord Westbury. The satirical nature of this engraving is evident as it depicts these political figures as dogs engaged in a fight. According to Mr Punch's account from March 29th, 1862 - great fun was had by all involved while the clerks caught up amidst their dispute would have to wait for resolution. This black-and-white caricature not only reflects the political climate of its time but also serves as a reminder that even within serious matters such as legislation and governance, moments of levity can emerge. It is through images like these that we gain insight into historical events with a touch of satire and wit.
