Bodhidharma Crossing the Yangzi on a Reed, 1300s. Creator: Unknown
Bodhidharma Crossing the Yangzi on a Reed, 1300s. Bodhidharma was a legendary Indian monk who is said to have transmitted the Chan (or Zen) doctrine from India to China in the 6th century. The inscribed poem is by the priest Liaoan Qingyu (1288-1363) and reads: " Wind rises from the reed flowers, the waves are high, / Its a long way to go beyond the cliff of the Shaoshi mountain, / Above the worlds of kalpas a flower is opening into five petals, / So that your barefoot heels are just fine for the whipping rattans."

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of Bodhidharma Crossing the Yangzi on a Reed, an ancient tale that has been beautifully depicted by an unknown artist in the 1300s. Bodhidharma, a legendary Indian monk, is believed to have brought the Chan (or Zen) doctrine from India to China during the 6th century. The image showcases Bodhidharma's perilous journey across the mighty Yangzi River using only a humble reed as his vessel. The inscribed poem by priest Liaoan Qingyu adds depth and meaning to this artwork. It speaks of how winds rise from blooming reed flowers while waves crash violently around him, symbolizing both nature's power and his determination. As he embarks on this treacherous voyage towards enlightenment, he faces immense challenges represented by the towering cliffs of Shaoshi mountain. However, beyond these obstacles lies a realm where time stretches infinitely - kalpas - where a flower blossoms into five delicate petals. Intriguingly, even amidst such adversity and pain endured through barefoot travel over whipping rattans, Bodhidharma remains steadfast in his pursuit of spiritual awakening. Displayed as an ink-on-paper hanging scroll at The Cleveland Museum of Art under Heritage Art/Heritage Images' care, this photograph allows us to appreciate not only its artistic beauty but also its historical significance within China's Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368).
