EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the historic Battle of Marengo, which took place on 14 June 1800. In this momentous event, General Louis Desaix showcased his exceptional talent and bravery. Upon hearing the deafening sound of cannons, he swiftly turned his divisions around and marched towards the source of the gunfire. Returning to the field of Marengo, Desaix approached Napoleon Bonaparte with a remarkable proposition – though they had lost the battle, there was still an opportunity to secure victory once more. With unwavering determination, Desaix launched a counterattack closely supported by a wedge of cannon fire. His men fearlessly charged at the Austrian forces. Tragically, this valiant assault cost General Louis Desaix his life. However, it proved decisive in turning the tide against their opponents as panic spread through their ranks. The Austrians broke and fled from the battlefield, leaving behind a staggering number of casualties totaling 14,000. The French forces also suffered losses during this intense conflict with approximately 7,000 soldiers falling in battle. Nevertheless, their resilience and strategic maneuvers led them to emerge triumphant that day. This extraordinary photograph not only depicts an iconic moment in history but also pays homage to General Louis Desaix's heroic sacrifice and Napoleon Bonaparte's leadership during one of Europe's most significant conflicts – The Napoleonic Wars.
