Stone facsimile of the Declaration of Independence, printed on parchment, with Stones imprint. Secretary of State John Quincy Adams, upon discovering the fragility of the original Declaration of Independence in 1820, ordered this exact facsimile to be produced. It took Stone three years to exactly copy and engrave the handwriting on the original document. This image is the closest facsimile of the original document. As such, the Stone facsimile has become the basis for all modern facsimiles. Two hundred copies of this broadside were distributed to surviving signers of the original document (John Adams, Thomas Jefferson and Charles Carroll), members of the federal and state governments, and selected universities and colleges in the United States. Despite such wide distribution, only about 30 copies of this facsimile survive.); eGilder Lehrman Institute of American History; American, out of copyright

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the renowned "Declaration of Independence, 1776,1st January 1823" facsimile on vellum by William James Stone. Measuring an impressive 84x39 cm, this remarkable piece is part of the Gilder Lehrman Collection in New York, USA. The significance of this facsimile lies in its historical context. In 1820, Secretary of State John Quincy Adams discovered that the original Declaration of Independence was becoming increasingly fragile. To preserve its essence for future generations, he commissioned Stone to meticulously reproduce it on parchment. The arduous task took three years as Stone painstakingly copied and engraved every detail from the original document's handwriting. Considered as one of the closest replicas to the original declaration, this Stone facsimile has become the foundation for all modern reproductions. Only about thirty copies survive today out of two hundred distributed during that time period. These were sent to surviving signers like John Adams and Thomas Jefferson, members of federal and state governments, as well as selected universities and colleges across America. Bridgeman Images beautifully captures this iconic work from American history through their lens. This print allows viewers to appreciate not only the artistry involved in creating such a faithful replica but also serves as a reminder of our nation's founding principles and ideals encapsulated within those timeless words penned over two centuries ago.
