EDITORS COMMENTS
The captivating portrait of Major Sir Neil Campbell, painted by Edouard Pingret in 1819, captures the essence of a distinguished British army officer. Clad in the uniform of the renowned 54th (West Norfolk) Regiment of Foot, Major Campbell exudes authority and confidence. With his telescopes and maps at hand, he epitomizes the spirit of exploration and strategic planning. Known as "The man who let Boney go". Major Campbell's legacy is intertwined with one of history's most iconic figures - Napoleon Bonaparte. Accompanying Napoleon to the island of Elba in 1814, Campbell found himself inadvertently responsible for allowing the French emperor to escape back to France while he was away on business in Florence. Undeterred by this setback, Major Campbell went on to command his regiment at significant battles such as Waterloo and Cambray during the Napoleonic Wars. His leadership skills were recognized when he was promoted to Major-General in 1825. Tragically, fate had other plans for this remarkable soldier. Appointed Governor of Sierra Leone, Major Sir Neil Campbell succumbed to fever and passed away in 1827. This exquisite painting not only immortalizes a brave military figure but also serves as a testament to an era defined by conflict and conquest. It reminds us that even those who shape history are subject to its unpredictable twists and turns.
