The 20th Burma Rifles were formed in 1922 from the amalgamation of the 70th Burma Rifles and the 85th Burman Rifles, both units having been formed during World War One (1914-1918). In 1937, with the separation of Burma from India, the Regiment became the Burma Rifles.

The 20th Burma Rifles came into existence in 1922 through the merger of two units, namely the 70th Burma Rifles and the 85th Burman Rifles, both established during World War One. Interestingly, with Burma's separation from India in 1937, this regiment underwent a transformation and became known as simply "the Burma Rifles".
