Bertram MacDonald & Stanley Ashby
Athletics
British Olympians, Bertram MacDonald, left, of Birchfield Harriers, and Stanley Ashby, of Godiva Harriers, pictured in 1927.
MacDonald represented Great Britain at the 1924 Paris Olympics, winning a silver medal in the 3, 000m team race. The first three runners placed on each six man team counted, and MacDonald was third overall, only beaten by legendary Finns Paavo Nurmi and Ville Ritola.
Ashby represented Great Britain at the 1928 Amsterdam Olympics in the 1500m. The badge on his chest refers to the England-France athletics meet at Stamford Bridge on 30th July 1927. England won by 66 points to 45, with Ashby making his international debut on the eve of his 20th birthday, at the time, the youngest-ever athlete to represent Great Britain in the 1500m/mile. That year he was the winner of the Midland 4-mile title, and would won the mile title a year later

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of British Olympians Bertram MacDonald and Stanley Ashby during their prime in 1927. Standing side by side, MacDonald, a member of Birchfield Harriers, and Ashby, representing Godiva Harriers, exude confidence and determination. MacDonald's notable achievement at the 1924 Paris Olympics is highlighted as he proudly displays his silver medal won in the fiercely competitive 3,000m team race. His exceptional performance placed him third overall among an elite group of runners that included legendary Finnish athletes Paavo Nurmi and Ville Ritola. On the other hand, Ashby's athletic prowess shines through as well. Representing Great Britain at the 1928 Amsterdam Olympics in the challenging 1500m event, he made his international debut on the eve of his twentieth birthday. Remarkably young for such a prestigious competition, Ashby became known as one of Britain's youngest-ever athletes to compete in this category. The badge adorning Ashby's chest signifies his participation in the England-France athletics meet held at Stamford Bridge on July 30th, 1927. This event showcased England's dominance with a resounding victory over France by a margin of 66 points to 45. Both MacDonald and Ashby were celebrated champions within their respective disciplines during this era. Their dedication to athletics is evident from their impressive achievements displayed proudly within this timeless photograph captured by Colorsport / Wilkes.
